My name is Janet and I am a Library Assistant in the Children’s Department at the West Palm Beach Public Library. What do I do? Hmmm…I am fortunate to be able to work with our patrons on a daily basis at the children’s desk. I also enjoy creating book displays and playing around with computer graphics and tech stuff. I love to learn new things. Sometimes I wish a person could just download knowledge straight to memory like in the movie The Matrix. There are just so many cool things to learn. Maybe that is how I ended up in a library. Everyday I get new questions to research and answer.
But I’m not always behind the desk, our children’s special events at the library are unlike any I know of and I have been able to be the “set designer” for many of them. Creating and building imaginary, interactive worlds from recyclables and any item that can be begged, borrowed, or found at the curbside is a rewarding challenge. Check out our flickr account, it’s easier to see than to describe!
My tastes for books, music, and movies are as varied as our library collection. Some of my favorite kids’ books are Skippyjon Jones and Ugly Fish. One of the better children’s book-to-movie adaptations I enjoyed was The Spiderwick Chronicles – which was a nice treat, I’m almost always disappointed when Hollywood steps into the literary world. (I got to meet one of the authors Tony DiTerlizzi at our library here! Very cool dude!) My music ranges from back in the day like Pink Floyd or The Doors, to whatever new my teenagers are listening to like My Chemical Romance or Three Days Grace. I like most anything, depending on my mood.
That’s enough of me for now. What’s your story?
