In honor of the amazing Polar Express program coming up this Friday at 5:30 and the (not quite) polar weather we are having, here are a few poems from the book,

Polar Animals by Paul Hess.

Reindeer

A WHISPERY GALLOP of hooves in the snow,
As reindeer play tag through each drift;
Splish-splush! Through the mush-slushy puddles they go-
O reindeer! Run silent, run swift!

Penguin

PENGUINS look immensely smart
It needs no explanation
They’re simply waiting patiently
For a dinner invitation.

Polar Bear

THE secret of the polar bear
Is that he wears long underwear.

grand-openingTwo Weeks Down!!!

Wow!!! It has been a great couple weeks at the new West Palm Beach Public Library.  I was ecstatic to see all of you during the week of our grand opening.  From the look on your faces, you were awe struck by the “hugeness” of your new space.  Everyone was satisfied and boy, we were busy.  In one day, our door counter estimated more than 4,000 people!!!  That is pretty amazing.

alien-balloonThe Grand Opening event in KidSpace was sponsored by the Friends of the library.  Yep, they were the ones who funded the whole thing, face painting, balloon making, and all! The event could not have been successful without them!

grand-opening-2If you missed the party, no need to feel down and out because there is so much more to come with our weekly activities and our summer reading program, Explore Space @ Your City Library.  Stay tuned for future activities and events here.  Check out the new cool stuff we’ve recently added to our collection.

I know you all are looking forward to some updates on our move and I was anxious for Internet connection so I could tell you all about it.  All I could think about today, when I found out that I had connection, was blogging about our successful move into the New City Center. Yes, we have offically moved in!!

After several days of hard work and superior organizational skills fromnew-city-center2 management, we have finally moved all our belongings into 411 Clematis Street.  With books, DVDs, magazines, computers, and the rest of our materials in, our new space looks even more remarkable.

I must say, my anticipation in our last conversation, “It’s Almost Time, was worth it.  The space is humongous and bright.

Though we still have some building issues to attend to before we open to the public, we are using the time very wisely, as we are preparing for another round of summer reading and activities in our new space.  Get ready to be blown away when the doors open to your new KidSpace!!!!

Be sure to join us for our Grand Opening Celebration with a week worth of events from April 15-19.  See you there!!!

Until we meet again,

~Remember, Reading is Awesome

Getting something new is always a special time for me. When I get something new my heart races, my smile shines as bright as the sunshine, and my excitement is contagious. I am getting the feeling right this minute as something new is coming our way.

It’s almost that time for the West Palm Beach Public Library’s move to the New City Center. We will be closing on Thursday, March 16, 2009 at 3:30pm. We are saying goodbye to the old and singing jubilees into the new.

I’ve seen our new space and I must say that it is like no other; it’s creative, colorful, unique, energetic, and awaits your company when we open. We anticipate to be opening on Monday, April 13, 2009. To verify our opening date, please check our website or call (561) 868-7700.

As you anxiously await the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace debut, check out some great materials before we close our doors.

I can’t believe I haven’t posted for over a week! I have been so very busy planning, thinking and meeting about the new library that is being built! It’s going to be bigger and better!! If you get a chance check out the City Center link of the City of West Palm Beach’s homepage. You can learn about the history of this project, ask questions and see designs.

What I can tell you about the Children’s Department is that it’s going to be magical, fun, interactive and just plain amazing. If you like the Children’s Department as it is now, then you’re going to love the new (four times the size) kid’s space in the new building. If you’ve ever been to a hands-on museum, then you will truly find our new kid’s space the best (with the addition of wonderful books, dvd’s, books on cd, music and computers!). Think educational but with a bright, fun and magical feel to it. This isn’t your grandma’s library!!

If you have any ideas about the new library, please share them with me! I would love to know what you think!
