Thanks to artists Mark Leahy, the next time you visit KidSpace you will see a majestic jungle as part of our decor!
Mr. Leahy works with The Young Singers of the Palm Beaches as a Visual/Scenic Designer. In their successful spring production, in May 2009 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, Act One was brought to a colorful conclusion with the song, “Circle of Life” from the musical, The Lion King.
For this number, Mark Leahy, together with the deft assistance of Peggy Duncan, created playful and majestic jungle animals as a homage to children’s book collage artist, Eric Carle.
In the field of scenic design, Mr. Leahy has created sets for such shows as Godspell, The Pirates of Penzance, and Carnival. In collaboration with his brother, Dan Leahy, they have created many original theatre projects and modern dance productions. His passion for theatre also includes directing, writing and producing. He has designed parties, fund raisers, and weddings. Mr. Leahy is also an installation artist and private yoga instructor! Yes, this West Palm Beach native wears many hats!
Mr. Leahy is currently out of the country co-directing an original children’s musical in Sweden. You can contact Mark Leahy via e-mail at: peacemark1000@yahoo.com.
Come check out his awesome group of animals, here, at the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace!

I was catching up on my blog reading this week and one of my favorites, Crazy for Kids Books, did a review on one of my favorite book of poems, Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry with a Beat, edited by Nikki Giovanni. After reading this great entry, I wondered why I never thought about blogging on this particular book.
This great collection of poems includes an audio CD that features more than 30 performances by writers like Eloise Greenfield, Maya Angelou, Elizabeth Swados, Queen Latifah, Nikki Grimes, Walter Dean Myers, Langston Hughes, W.E.B Dubois, Gwendolyn Brooks, and so many more. Many of us had the opportunity to read some poems by many of these writers and/or even heard them recited by people.
Now is the chance for you to actually hear them read by the poets themselves. Nothing is better than hearing the melody from the lyricist. Be sure to drop by and listen to the beat of Hip Hop Speaks to Children at the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace. Here is just a snippet of one of my favorite tunes in this book:
Let’s love ourselves then we can’t fail
To make a better situation
Tomorrow, our seeds will grow
All we need is dedication…
Everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
After winter, must come spring
Change, it comes eventually
Everything is Everything, by Lauryn Hill.

“We are all born free”
Posted by: wpbkids on: November 10, 2008
My sister, Jeanne, sent me an email today about Human Rights Awareness for kids. In 2006 Ms. Jeanne created a presentation about Human Rights Awareness for children; to take a look at her presentation, click here.
Human Rights are the most basic rights of freedom entitled to all humans. One of the biggest human rights organizations, Amnesty International, has come up with a better way to educate you about your basic rights. “We are all born free” is their book that celebrates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. If you don’t quite understand what human rights are and what it means, ask a grown up or come visit the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace for some more information.
Be sure to check these books out that covers some issues concerninig Human Rights Awareness:
Selavi by Youme Landowne
Harvesting Hope by Kathleen Krull
Luba: The angel of Bergen-Belsen by Luba Tryszynska-Frederick
Baseball saved us by Ken Mockhizuki
Broken Beaks by Nathaniel Lachenmeyer

KIDS VOTE…AND THE WINNER IS…
Posted by: wpbkids on: November 4, 2008
Kids Vote Early
The ballots were counted today by 2 of our YS Poll Workers on staff.
There were a total of 142 ballots! All ballots were counted but two; one was disqualified because the voter, voted for both candidates and the other because it was not one of our ‘real’ ballots and had 3 voter names signed on it. After cross-checking the names, they were not found on our voter registration.
There were no hanging chads or other voter irregularities.

Kids Vote Early Results:

IT IS YOUR FREEDOM TO READ!!!
Posted by: wpbkids on: September 30, 2008
SO WHAT’S THE POINT????

The point is now you know that your freedom to read is so important that SOME PEOPLE challenge IT…
Here are some examples of books that have been challenged?
I know you are totally shocked right now! So was I, I mean, I remember reading Judy Blume when I was young like you.
So, if you want to find out more about what books have been banned click here and be sure to come and visit The West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace.
