spotfantasyartMonday was our grand opening to Fab Lab 4 Kids: A Computer Class Just 4 Kids in grades 3-6.  It’s not just a class where you can surf the web and listen to a teacher telling you about websites…boring!

This is a one hour class focused on one software per meeting.  This past Monday we learned about a software called ArtRage. It’s an online drawing software that allows you to import pictures and edit them.  Then with the skills you learn, your picture will become your very own masterpiece.   How cool is that!  What’s even cooler is you can download it for free!

If you missed this class, no worries, because on October 19th you’ll have a chance to create your own online game show!!!  When you stop byKidSpace, check out some of our materials on the subject of computers.  See you then!

My sister librarian, Jennifer, forwarded to me the March 2009 issue of the Florida Library Youth Program Forward (FLYP).  This is a great issue from the State Library that focuses on Youth Programming.  What caught my interest was the article about Web Tools for photo sharing, creating, and editing.  I thought this would interest many of you who are interested in creative gift ideas, designing photo albums, and/or sharing your photos.  These tools are awesome and I can’t wait to make a Stained Glass Collage.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11th; it is a day you thank and honor all those who served in the military.  Veterans are those who serve/served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard in times of war or peace.I already sent my appreciation cards to my Uncle V, my Aunt J, and my friend Bob who all served in the Air Force.

While I was doing my normal surfing for kids stuff, I landed on VA Kids, K-12th.  This awesome website is dedicated to educating you all about Veterans Day.  With cool games, activities, and facts, you learn all about why we celebrate Veterans Day. Part of the website even gives grown ups some good information and ideas for celebrating Veterans Day. If you would like some more information on Veterans Day, take a look at these:

My sister, Jeanne, sent me an email today about Human Rights Awareness for kids.  In 2006 Ms. Jeanne created a presentation about Human Rights Awareness for children; to take a look at her presentation, click here. human-rights2

Human Rights are the most basic rights of freedom entitled to all humans.  One of the biggest human rights organizations, Amnesty International, has come up with a better way to educate you about your basic rights.  We are all born free is their book that celebrates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. If you don’t quite understand what human rights are and what it means, ask a grown up or come visit the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace for some more information.

Be sure to check these books out that covers some issues concerninig Human Rights Awareness:

Kids Vote Early

The ballots were counted today by 2 of our YS Poll Workers on staff.election

There were a total of 142 ballots!  All ballots were counted but two; one was disqualified because the voter, voted for both candidates and the other because it was not one of our ‘real’ ballots and had 3 voter names signed on it.  After cross-checking the names, they were not found on our voter registration.

There were no hanging chads or other voter irregularities.

Day of the Dead (DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS) is a celebration that took place this past weekend, November 1st-2nd, 2008.

Day of the Dead is mostly celebrated in Mexico.  It is the day that friends and family get together to pray for and remember relatives and friends that have passed away.  This day is also celebrated in different communities around the United States like in Texas and Arizona.  To read more about Day of the Dead, take a trip to the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace and check out:

Hey Kids, Moms & Dads, and everyone else!

I’m so excited; I voted early!

Yep, I already casted my vote for president and for other representatives and issues!   Wow, does it feel good to have my ballot casted and not have to worry about voting November 4!  No hurricane, earthquake, or illness has ever kept me from voting, however this year, there are many more thousands of registered voters all across the United States and if everyone waited to vote that one, single day, can you imagine?   Thank goodness, voters are turning out in record numbers this year to vote early.   I am urging everyone I know and then some, to VOTE EARLY and to take someone else with you to vote, too!

Here’s what I did:  I woke up early Friday, October 24, my usual day off and right away I called my mother-in-law to see if I could pick her up to go vote early!  She was thrilled!  She had been worrying about when she would make the time to go and was a bit anxious about the long lines she had been seeing on the news.  But we went together and we had FUN!   We stood outside the Supervisor’s of Election Office for 2 hours.  We got rained on several times but most people had umbrellas and everyone was happy to be casting their vote early!   We felt so patriotic!

We brought a sample ballot with us and discussed the issues further while we were in line.   Reviewing your sample ballot and knowing the other representatives and amendments in order to make informed votes is best!   We experienced no technical glitches or human problems while we were there!  The election office was well staffed and very organized; it was a very smooth process!  We can only hope that we do not have problems with the tallying or missing ballots!
