A few Saturdays ago, I went to a workshop that featured Denise Fleming, children’s author and illustrator, presented by The Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition. Mrs. Fleming, along with her husband, illustrated great ways to combine arts and crafts with reading. She brought with her examples of props to make reading aloud more interactive and fun.  Her passion for art, verbs, and children, is wonderful.  Her energy is positive and contagious.

During the workshop Mrs. Fleming showed us a short video on how she creates illustrations.  In addition to this, she also gave us a live illustration on papermaking.  Her awesome technique is what captures her readers into her artwork.  The BookMoot, a blog I read, had a great post about Denise Fleming, the medium she uses, as well as her inspirations, so check it out!

Learn more about Denise Fleming and her work here.  Come visit the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace for some of her great books, like:

In the Tall, Tall grass

In the Small, Small pond

The Cow Who Clucked

Barnyard Banter

Buster

The Everything Book

Alphabet Under Construction

One of our ongoing programs of the year is Birthday Saturdays.  Every third Saturday of the month, at 11am, we travel to chosen country for a birthday celebration with stories, music, and a craft related to the country.  Everyone gets their very own passport to enter into the country and join the party.img_3134

In January we celebrated China with No, that’s wrong by Ji Zhaohua, painted Chinese characters on calligraphy scrolls that all the kids got to take home, sang happy birthday to China, ate cake, and each child received a gift to take home.  We had an awesome time.

So, If you are looking for some family fun, come to Birthday Saturday; we have it all: free entertainment, educational activities, cake, and gifts.  I’ll see you on February 21 at 11am in KidSpace at the West Palm Beach Public Library for our celebration in Italy, Venice, Italy to be exact.  We will be making masquerade masks, so come on out and party with us.

Until we meet again,

Veterans Day is Nov. 11th; it is a day you thank and honor all those who served in the military.  Veterans are those who serve/served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard in times of war or peace.I already sent my appreciation cards to my Uncle V, my Aunt J, and my friend Bob who all served in the Air Force.

While I was doing my normal surfing for kids stuff, I landed on VA Kids, K-12th.  This awesome website is dedicated to educating you all about Veterans Day.  With cool games, activities, and facts, you learn all about why we celebrate Veterans Day. Part of the website even gives grown ups some good information and ideas for celebrating Veterans Day. If you would like some more information on Veterans Day, take a look at these:

Love, Lizzie: letters to a military mom by Lisa Tucker

Until we meet again…
