This weekend I was lucky enough to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at the Universal themepark in Orlando! It was a great time and a must do for Harry Potter fans.

It was a misty morning as we walked into Hogsmead. The Hogwarts castle was visible above the buildings. Employees and visitors alike were wandering the streets dressed in wizard garb. As we waited in line to enter Ollivanders wand shop, a spontanious conversation sprung up between strangers about the details of each Hogwarts House. You can sip Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice as you walk around, or have a sit-down meal at the Three Broomsticks (reservations recommended). All of this created a truly magical atmosphere that did justice to one of the best stories of our time.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey takes you on a fast-paced, virtual ride around Hogwarts. Waiting in the line that travels through the castle is half the fun! I made it a point to ride the Flight of the Hippogryph multiple times; make sure to bow to Buckbeak! I must admit, I was too much of a Muggle to go on the Dragon Challenge. I did hear from one kid that it was awesome!

4th of July weekend is coming up, so now is the time to brush up on our National Anthem. There were four verses written; see if you can memorize more than one!

 The Star-Spangled Banner

The Anthem was written by Frances Scott Key in 1814.

SPACE SPAC

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:
Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause. it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I am so excited that our November/December 2009 calendar of events is available.  Be sure to stop by the West Palm Beach Public  Library’s  webpage and take a peek.  We have some cool events that will surely get you up, out, and moving! One of the events that I am particularly fond of is Monday Night Movies.  It’s a great family fun event that can become a tradition.  All movies are not suitable for the young ones, but if you have a few children that are in different age groups, you can always  spend time alone with each seeing a great FREE movie suitable for them.  Here are the list of movies for November/December2009:

Ice Age 3 (PG)  Nov. 9

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (PG-13) Nov. 16

In 1999 NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) was founded by Chris Baty, who thought it would be awesome to use the Internet to make novel writing fun for everyone.  After a successful few years and teachers wanting their classrooms to be a part of this creativity, the Young Writers Program was founded and is booming.  In 2008, more than 22,000 young writers (17 years and nanowrimoyounger) participated!

NaNoWriMo for Young Writers takes place every November; from November 1-30 you will be challenged to write a novel in just 30 days.  Yes, I said 30 days!  So if you are 17-years-old or younger, take advantage of this great opportunity to share your creativity with others.  It’s not about quality, but quantity! There’s no limit so on November 1st begin to write, write, and write some more!

Sign up and get started, the time is almost here for young writers to take over NaNoWriMo with their “great frantic novel!”

Don’t forget to visit the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace to tell me all about your experience and share it with your family.

Until we meet again,

~Remember, Reading is Awesome!
