I am so excited that our November/December 2009 calendar of events is available.  Be sure to stop by the West Palm Beach Public  Library’s  webpage and take a peek.  We have some cool events that will surely get you up, out, and moving! One of the events that I am particularly fond of is Monday Night Movies.  It’s a great family fun event that can become a tradition.  All movies are not suitable for the young ones, but if you have a few children that are in different age groups, you can always  spend time alone with each seeing a great FREE movie suitable for them.  Here are the list of movies for November/December2009:

Transformers (PG-13)   Nov. 2

Ice Age 3 (PG)  Nov. 9

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (PG-13) Nov. 16

Polar Express (G)  Nov. 30

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (PG-13)  Dec. 14

My Sister’s Keeper (PG-13)  Dec. 21

In 1999 NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) was founded by Chris Baty, who thought it would be awesome to use the Internet to make novel writing fun for everyone.  After a successful few years and teachers wanting their classrooms to be a part of this creativity, the Young Writers Program was founded and is booming.  In 2008, more than 22,000 young writers (17 years and nanowrimoyounger) participated!

NaNoWriMo for Young Writers takes place every November; from November 1-30 you will be challenged to write a novel in just 30 days.  Yes, I said 30 days!  So if you are 17-years-old or younger, take advantage of this great opportunity to share your creativity with others.  It’s not about quality, but quantity! There’s no limit so on November 1st begin to write, write, and write some more!

Sign up and get started, the time is almost here for young writers to take over NaNoWriMo with their “great frantic novel!”

Don’t forget to visit the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace to tell me all about your experience and share it with your family.

summerThe month of August is often the warmest of all, with the sun shining every chance it gets. During this time, we often choose to cool off at the pool, water parks, and the beach with our little ones.  There are many parents and caregivers out there that spend an ample amount of time looking for the “right” sunscreen and reading labels to make sure it’s enough and not too much, but the truth is, how do we know?

Last week I read an article, in the July issue of South Florida Parenting, about tips for choosing the right protection for our little ones.  One of the tips stressed is using “chemical free” sunscreen for kids containing titanium dioxide as the active ingredient, as it is better absorbed by the skin and begins to work at the time of its application.  Keep in mind you want to choose a sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB rays.  Remember that the best barrier is shelter; try to avoid direct sun exposure, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when rays are strongest

Also keep in mind, while you are trying to protect your little ones, that small amount of sun exposure is awesome; as it helps our bodies produce vitamin D.

For more great tips and information on sun safety for kids, check these items out at the West Palm Beach Public Library:

The count down has finally come to an end! Fans are sure to be standing  in  long lines today to be among the first to see the new Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  This is the sixth movie of the series based on the writings of J.K. Rowling.  It is the magical and suspenseful nature of this series that keeps fans wanting more.

When I think back to the first Harry Potter movie, I find it hard to believe that the magic began 8 years ago and the feature adaptations will cover a span of 10 years!  My anticipation to see Potter and his friends return to Hogwarts for another year is as if I have never read the books and I know this is the feeling amongst many fans.  Thank goodness there is still one more book that will be divided into TWO films!

The book-to-movie adaptations will soon end with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and II, which are set to release in 2011.

For those who have yet to read the Harry Potter series and/or need a refresher, come check them out at KidSpace:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Enjoy Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and be sure to send me your personal reviews of the movie.

IMG_1112Let’s read…let’s read…let’s read West Palm Beach! The West Palm Beach Public Library is actively seeking adults that love to read for their “Let’s Read” Program.  The “Let’s Read” program brings volunteers from our community into four local schools and introduces young children to the joy of reading.

The Palm Beach Post, one of our sponsors, makes it possible for every child in the program to receive wonderful new books to begin their own home library.

Volunteers donate one hour per week and make a ten week commitment to the program.  Training and all materials are provided for interested readers.  Call 868-7786 for more information and to get trained to become a volunteer for the fall session.

Join our team of excellent volunteers and share beautiful books with children. Let’s read!

Your sister librarian, Judy Hillberg

It’s true, the word is out! award winning children’s author of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Mo Willems, is allowing the pigeon to “tweet”!

Yes, you heard correctly; the pigeon is out!  Starting July 10th, the pigeon will tweet live from the American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

So, be sure to look out for the pigeon and check out the books that made him so famous!
