Read to a dog, read to a cow, read to a kitty,

or read to a sow.

Read to your Barbie, read to your teddy, read to your toys before you go to beddy.

Read, read, read, let’s read.

This an entertaining rhyme we do with children during story time.  Read to a dog?  Yes, that’s what we do at our library.  And I’m not talking about stuffed animals.  We have reading time with real, live dogs.  There are six dogs that visit our library every week to listen to children read stories to them.  Rex, Hairy, Minnie, Shirl, Taylor and Oliver make up the team.  They are all licensed therapy dogs.  They are here to listen to children read and make new friends.  Dogs are just the world’s best listeners!  They don’t interrupt and they don’t correct.  And best of all, they never criticize their readers.  If you haven’t met our wonderful canine creatures, do come and visit one day.  Their tails will be wagging and waiting to hear your dog tales! Have you heard? The American Library Association’s book and media awards were announced in January. If you haven’t had a chance to check out any of the award winning titles here’s an abbreviated list that can help you get started. Click on any of the book titles to find a copy at the library!

The Newbery Medal for best story went to… When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead  is a story about a twelve-year-old named Miranda as she grows up in New York in 1978. Miranda’s favorite book is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle. I just read a Wrinkle in Time while I wait for my turn with When You Reach Me.

If non-fiction is more your style try Newbery Honor Book, Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice written by Phillip Hoose. Claudette was just 15 when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in 1955. Later that year Rosa Parks did the same thing.

The Caldecott Medal for best pictures went to… The Lion and the Mouse, illustrated and written by Jerry Pinkney.  There are some amazing illustrations in the Caldecott Honor Books too!  All the World, illustrated by Marla Frazee, written by Liz Garton Scanlon, Red Sings from Treetops: A Year in Colors, illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski, written by Joyce Sidman .

The Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award went to… My People illustrated by Charles R. Smith Jr., written by Langston Hughes. The Coretta Scott King Author Award went to… Vaunda Micheaux Nelson, author of Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U.S. Marshal.

If you’d like to see more award winners visit the ALA Awards page here! Happy Reading

Did you think we forgot about you? We know … it’s been a while. In November our blogger (and KidSpace librarian) Ms. Christina bid a fond farewell to the West Palm Beach Public Library and moved to the Jefferson Library all the way in Louisiana. We will all miss Christina terribly, but know that the kids in New Orleans are lucky to have her – and we know they will love her as much as we do! The KidSpace blog is now back up and running, so be sure to check with us back regularly.

Chug, chug, chug, chug, toot, toot!

Do you hear that? It’s the sound of the 6th Annual Polar Express  heading to the West Palm Beach Public Library!  We can’t wait for it to reach our station! The magic begins this Friday, December 4th at 5:30.  Catch a train to the North Pole where you can meet Santa, listen to a good reindeer joke, and play reindeer games!  While you’re there don’t forget to decorate a yummy cookie and warm your insides with a cup hot cocoa!  Join the fun in the West Palm Beach Public Library, City Center Courtyard.

If you have a little extra to spare this season, help us fill Santa’s sack with your donation of new unwrapped toys for needy children and spread some holiday cheer! Call the Children’s Library at 561-868-7703 for additional information!

We can’t wait to see your merry faces this Friday!

I am so excited that our November/December 2009 calendar of events is available.  Be sure to stop by the West Palm Beach Public  Library’s  webpage and take a peek.  We have some cool events that will surely get you up, out, and moving! One of the events that I am particularly fond of is Monday Night Movies.  It’s a great family fun event that can become a tradition.  All movies are not suitable for the young ones, but if you have a few children that are in different age groups, you can always  spend time alone with each seeing a great FREE movie suitable for them.  Here are the list of movies for November/December2009:

Ice Age 3 (PG)  Nov. 9

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (PG-13) Nov. 16

In 1999 NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) was founded by Chris Baty, who thought it would be awesome to use the Internet to make novel writing fun for everyone.  After a successful few years and teachers wanting their classrooms to be a part of this creativity, the Young Writers Program was founded and is booming.  In 2008, more than 22,000 young writers (17 years and nanowrimoyounger) participated!

NaNoWriMo for Young Writers takes place every November; from November 1-30 you will be challenged to write a novel in just 30 days.  Yes, I said 30 days!  So if you are 17-years-old or younger, take advantage of this great opportunity to share your creativity with others.  It’s not about quality, but quantity! There’s no limit so on November 1st begin to write, write, and write some more!

Sign up and get started, the time is almost here for young writers to take over NaNoWriMo with their “great frantic novel!”

Don’t forget to visit the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace to tell me all about your experience and share it with your family.

Until we meet again,

~Remember, Reading is Awesome!
