I was catching up on my blog reading this week and one of my favorites, Crazy for Kids Books, did a review on one of my favorite book of poems, Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry with a Beat, edited by Nikki Giovanni. After reading this great entry, I wondered why I never thought about blogging on this particular book.
This great collection of poems includes an audio CD that features more than 30 performances by writers like Eloise Greenfield, Maya Angelou, Elizabeth Swados, Queen Latifah, Nikki Grimes, Walter Dean Myers, Langston Hughes, W.E.B Dubois, Gwendolyn Brooks, and so many more. Many of us had the opportunity to read some poems by many of these writers and/or even heard them recited by people.
Now is the chance for you to actually hear them read by the poets themselves. Nothing is better than hearing the melody from the lyricist. Be sure to drop by and listen to the beat of Hip Hop Speaks to Children at the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace. Here is just a snippet of one of my favorite tunes in this book:
Let’s love ourselves then we can’t fail
To make a better situation
Tomorrow, our seeds will grow
All we need is dedication…
Everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
After winter, must come spring
Change, it comes eventually
Everything is Everything, by Lauryn Hill.
Until we meet again,
~Remember, Reading is Awesome!
