birthday

Somebody out of the thousands that are reading this blog is celebrating a birthday today and I know two of them.  Today, my twin nieces, GG and JJ, are five.  The big five they’ve been waiting for since they were four.  Turning five ensures that they are:

Five times more likely to ask, “But why?”

FIve times more likely to try on my clothes and shoes.

FiVe times more likely to pour milk into the bowl of cereal instead of the chair their standing on.

FivE times more likely to make me smile at one of their mixed up sayings.

With pounds of chocolate cake and brand new roller skates, I am guaranteed double the laughter from the smeared chocolate on their face and tears from the falls on their roller skates. But, over all GG and JJ are awesome and sure can’t wait until they turn six!

grand-openingTwo Weeks Down!!!

Wow!!! It has been a great couple weeks at the new West Palm Beach Public Library.  I was ecstatic to see all of you during the week of our grand opening.  From the look on your faces, you were awe struck by the “hugeness” of your new space.  Everyone was satisfied and boy, we were busy.  In one day, our door counter estimated more than 4,000 people!!!  That is pretty amazing.

alien-balloonThe Grand Opening event in KidSpace was sponsored by the Friends of the library.  Yep, they were the ones who funded the whole thing, face painting, balloon making, and all! The event could not have been successful without them!

grand-opening-2If you missed the party, no need to feel down and out because there is so much more to come with our weekly activities and our summer reading program, Explore Space @ Your City Library.  Stay tuned for future activities and events here.  Check out the new cool stuff we’ve recently added to our collection.

familyfun

My sister Librarian, Ms. Jennifer, was reading the September issue of FamilyFun, a Disney magazine about fun activities for kids and parents to enjoy together.  As you know, in the fall months we talked about the voting and election process.  In this issue, Ms. Jennifer, read an article, Dinner Elections, on the Jebsen family. Chris and Sarah Jebsen wanted to teach their kids about the value of voting through family fun.  In doing this, they gave their eldest, Nicholas, “the chance to vote on a topic that he’s quite passionate about: dinner.”  They began with 6 parties (six categories of dinner: main dish, vegetable, side dish, fruit, dessert, and drink) and a running campaign (consisting of a chart with all of the contenders under each party).  Finally, the day of the election arrived; each member of the family chose their candidate under each category and dinner was elected in a matter of minutes. This activity teaches the kids that each vote counts and just like a real election, they anticipate the results.  I found this activity exciting and plan to use it with my nephews.

Think about ways that you can bring Elections, or other “grown-up” responsibilities into your home for some family fun.
