familyFor years we have listened and read studies on how television affects the family unit, primarily children.  Such reports recognize that nutrition, time, learning, and physical activities are greatly influenced through television viewing.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggest that children 2 and under should not be exposed to television as there is lack of research in the area of TV and toddlers.  We do know the first 2 years of life are crucial in the growth and development of a child’s brain.  Healthy brain development is parallel with positive exposure/interaction with the world around them.

Many of us are aware that some parents and caregivers must work and/or do not have the ability to monitor children at all times.  If you decide to allow television to be viewed by your children,  AAP lists 10 things parents can do to help your child develop positive viewing habits:”

  1. Set Limits
  2. Plan your child’s viewing
  3. Watch TV with your child
  4. Find the right message
  5. Help your child resist commercials
  6. Look for quality children’s videos
  7. Give other options
  8. Set a good example
  9. Express your views
  10. Get more information

lunch boxMy sister librarian, Ms. Kim, and I were talking about different lunch options for her children.  One of her boys enjoy PB&J sandwiches, but doesn’t like them soggy, which they are by the time lunch comes around.  Her other boys enjoy variety and not necessarily a quick fix, like the normal sandwich, fruit, and drink.  So, I decided to do a little research and found a gallore of recipes you can include in your kid’s lunch boxes.  Here are some great resources that I came across; check them out at the West Palm Beach Public Library:

Salad People by Mollie Katzen (New [Vegetarian] Cookbook for Preschoolers & up)

Walk-Around Tacos by Nick Fauchild

A+ Lunches and Snacks by Disney Family Fun (website)

Honest Pretzels by Mollie Katzen

Eat Well, Live Well With Growing Children by Karen Kingham

IMG_0001As part of the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace Summer Reading Program, Explore Space @ Your City Library, we gave you an opportunity to enter into Cosmic Poetry, a poetry contest where you created a poem all about space!

There were more than a dozen entries of awesome poems and it was awfully hard to pick just one first place winner!  Congratulations to our first place winner, Zoe.  Check out what she wrote:

My Science Project

I’ve got to go to space, to discover a new race.  Because if I don’t bring back something cool, my teacher will kick me out of school.  It’ll have green bubbling skin and red eyes, and bigger than everyone else’s in size.  When I bring it into school everyone will blow their cool.  The teachers will run and hide and the students will dash and collide.  And that’s why I’ve go to go to space, and discover a new race.

bugThe National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) has  joined the commitment with the White House and the Corporation for National & Community Service on their “Summer Education Service Initiative.”  This initiative focuses on summer reading loss, as many of the reading gains made during the school year is often lost during the summer.

The NBCDI encourages parents and caregivers to dedicate their time in assisting children with reading.  This can be done in many ways:

  • Donate books to your local library, childcare and community centers, and schools in your community.
  • Host a summer reading club for children.
  • Read to a child and/or have a child read to you for at least one hour a week.
  • Choose your own education/literacy activity to do with children.

The Initiative will last for 81 days; from June 22 – September 11, you have an opportunity to do more and get a child’s mind right.

To make a pledge or get additional information, contact moreinfo@nbcdi.org or call 202-833-2220 x6089

At the West Palm Beach Public Library you can check out some great resources for reading encouragement:

The West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace presents The Adventures of Charles Pierce: The American Jungle, by Harvey Oyer.  Oyer is a local publisher, attorney, civic leader, and archaeologis!  He dives deep into the adventures of Charles Pierce, a young boy who has moved from Chicago to the wild, South Florida, to discover the American Jungle.  This book is great for children ages 9-12, especially boys.

This story is based on the real life experiences of Charlie W. Pierce, Oyer’s great-grand uncle.  The stories have been passed down through five generations.  How cool!!!!

Be sure to visit KidSpace on June 28th from 2-3 where you will get to hear and see the author, Harvey Oyer, read the Adventures of Charlie Pierce: The American Jungle.

Come out and enjoy the story, meet the author, and make a special craft to take home!!

I know you all are looking forward to some updates on our move and I was anxious for Internet connection so I could tell you all about it.  All I could think about today, when I found out that I had connection, was blogging about our successful move into the New City Center. Yes, we have offically moved in!!

After several days of hard work and superior organizational skills fromnew-city-center2 management, we have finally moved all our belongings into 411 Clematis Street.  With books, DVDs, magazines, computers, and the rest of our materials in, our new space looks even more remarkable.

I must say, my anticipation in our last conversation, “It’s Almost Time, was worth it.  The space is humongous and bright.

Though we still have some building issues to attend to before we open to the public, we are using the time very wisely, as we are preparing for another round of summer reading and activities in our new space.  Get ready to be blown away when the doors open to your new KidSpace!!!!

Be sure to join us for our Grand Opening Celebration with a week worth of events from April 15-19.  See you there!!!

Until we meet again,
