Science Projects 101 miscpicsnew-library-008

Why a science program for our kids @ our city library?

Simple; Kids will benefit!   The more science experiences you can offer kids, the better, no matter what level!

The Science Projects 101 program is designed as a basic workshop in which parents and kids become familiar with science terms and concepts, while actually conducting a FUN and simple science experiment using the ‘scientific method’.

Providing a hands-on science program for our urban youth at our city library, will result in science competencies gained, a more positive attitude toward science, and inspired youth!

Science Projects 101 is typically for kids, grades 1 – 5… their parents are encouraged to attend!

The next Science Project 101 will be held in September, 2009 in our new city library!  I can’t wait!

Check our online calendar in the near future for date & registration!

See you soon!

Your librarian, Ms. Jeanne

My sister, Jeanne, sent me an email today about Human Rights Awareness for kids.  In 2006 Ms. Jeanne created a presentation about Human Rights Awareness for children; to take a look at her presentation, click here. human-rights2

Human Rights are the most basic rights of freedom entitled to all humans.  One of the biggest human rights organizations, Amnesty International, has come up with a better way to educate you about your basic rights.  We are all born free is their book that celebrates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. If you don’t quite understand what human rights are and what it means, ask a grown up or come visit the West Palm Beach Public Library’s KidSpace for some more information.

Be sure to check these books out that covers some issues concerninig Human Rights Awareness:

Kids Vote Early

The ballots were counted today by 2 of our YS Poll Workers on staff.election

There were a total of 142 ballots!  All ballots were counted but two; one was disqualified because the voter, voted for both candidates and the other because it was not one of our ‘real’ ballots and had 3 voter names signed on it.  After cross-checking the names, they were not found on our voter registration.

There were no hanging chads or other voter irregularities.

Hey Kids, Moms & Dads, and everyone else!

I’m so excited; I voted early!

Yep, I already casted my vote for president and for other representatives and issues!   Wow, does it feel good to have my ballot casted and not have to worry about voting November 4!  No hurricane, earthquake, or illness has ever kept me from voting, however this year, there are many more thousands of registered voters all across the United States and if everyone waited to vote that one, single day, can you imagine?   Thank goodness, voters are turning out in record numbers this year to vote early.   I am urging everyone I know and then some, to VOTE EARLY and to take someone else with you to vote, too!

Here’s what I did:  I woke up early Friday, October 24, my usual day off and right away I called my mother-in-law to see if I could pick her up to go vote early!  She was thrilled!  She had been worrying about when she would make the time to go and was a bit anxious about the long lines she had been seeing on the news.  But we went together and we had FUN!   We stood outside the Supervisor’s of Election Office for 2 hours.  We got rained on several times but most people had umbrellas and everyone was happy to be casting their vote early!   We felt so patriotic!

We brought a sample ballot with us and discussed the issues further while we were in line.   Reviewing your sample ballot and knowing the other representatives and amendments in order to make informed votes is best!   We experienced no technical glitches or human problems while we were there!  The election office was well staffed and very organized; it was a very smooth process!  We can only hope that we do not have problems with the tallying or missing ballots!
